VFXShow 225 : Star Trek Discovery

In this episode, Matt Wallin, Mike Seymour and Jason Diamond look at the new CBS: Star Trek, Discovery. They discuss it both in terms of the visual effects and the history of Trek TV VFX, but also the business model of this type of production away from Network television.

This new show is part of the CBS All Access which includes such shows as The Good Fight. Dsicovery is also being shown on Netflix. This vfxshow was recorded after eps 1 and 2 but before this week’s third episode was aired or released.

As noted by Variety magazine the costs of Star Trek: Discovery average between $8 million-$8.5 million per episode. «The high cost is at least partly due to a show like Discovery needing to create virtually everything from scratch and requiring multiple soundstages at Toronto-based Pinewood Studios. According to the report, the Klingon ship set alone cost $3 million».
